Simple Succulents...

Succulents and Cacti at Pigment

Over here at Pigment, we have been doing quite a bit of planting. Succulents are our favorite plants to make an array of awesome and unique planters. Succulents come in so many different shapes and sizes and are pretty easy to care for, so kinda the best plant friend you can have. Here are some tips on how to care for them once they're home with you and some inspirational photos of some of the plantings we've been creating.

Succulents and Cacti at Pigment

While succulents have a reputation for being low maintenance, these species still need some caring for - they need protection from scorching sun in the summer, and freezing temperatures in the winter and prefer dry environments to those that are rainy or humid. So pretty perfect for Southern California! Planting your succulents in pots and keeping them indoors during hot hot day and super chilly nights gives them a little protection from those elements.

Succulents and Cacti at Pigment

Did you know that cacti can serve as a fire break? In "Succulents Simplified" Debra Lee Baldwin recalls her father planting cacti around the perimeter of their family ranch to serve both as a fire break and a security fence. Who needs barbed wire when you have prickly pears?

Succulents and Cacti at Pigment

If you find that your succulents have distorted growth at it's leaf axils or you see cottony bits in the centers of the rosettes, the cause is more than likely Mealybugs, a common critter that attacks many indoor plants. To get rid of these annoying pests, remove or isolate the affected plant(s) and spray or wipe with diluted isopropyl alcohol and improve the air circulation.

Succulents and Cacti at Pigment

How can you tell if you have been overwatering your succulents? Succulents retain water in their leaves, so they like to almost completely dry out between their waterings. So overwatering can be done easily. If they have a squishy stem or trunk, that's usually a sign your succulents are a little too wet. Their roots are super soaked! You can remedy this by taking cuttings from healthy tissue and replant. Remember to discard the old soil with the plant.

Succulents and Cacti at Pigment

What about under watering? Yes, succulents are meant to be drought tolerant plants, but they still need to be watered. If your succulents have lost their sheen or are shriveling at the tips, then it's a sure sign that they are thirsty. Be sure to water your plant thoroughly and that the soil is about as moist as a wrung-out sponge. You can read more about succulents and how to care and maintain them, and find tips on basic designs in the wonderful and informative book "Succulents Simplified" and here's a video from the author Debra Lee Baldwin on making your own succulent container garden.

Pigment is Growing (up)...

After five and a half years Pigment secured a new lease in a new home just two doors from the old space, and it is bittersweet to leave the place where it all started. Humble beginnings come to mind when thinking of the genesis of Pigment (then known as Kalos Designs). Initially a shared space with Kate Ross Shoes, it functioned primarily as a space to display Amy's artwork. In time, they featured other talented artists, Ramone Zarate of Autonomous Design Studio and Britt Neubacher of Tend Living were among the firsts. Store music blared from a small boom box and a one year old puppy named Cash greeted you at the door.  A year later and a name change to Pigment, the modest storefront grew into a full fledged lifestyle store. After five years we found ourselves growing, growing, growing! So much so that we moved into a bigger space.

A Show by Shelby Collins

One of Pigment's newer additions to the team, Miss Shelby Collins, had her opening reception for her Senior Exhibition Monday night at Point Loma Nazarene University. She's been working really hard on this all year, so we were sure to be there and show our love and support.

Shelby joined the Pigment family last summer after meeting Pigment owner, Amy Paul, in a  color theory class at Point Loma Nazarene taught by Amy. Inspired by Amy and Pigment's carefully curated concepts, Shelby jumped at the opportunity to work with us and we're so happy to have her.

We couldn't be more proud of her on this day. Congratulations Shelby! If you get a chance, swing by the store and say HI! --- She's really, super nice.

Inside the Artist Studio

Hey Friends! It's Monday, but we're not mad at it. Ray at Night happened this past Saturday (if you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, do it! Every second Saturday of each month from 6-10 p.m on Ray street in North Park, San Diego),  and so did the very first "Inside the Artist Studio" tours, put on by North Park for the Arts and sponsored by North Park Main Street.  We got to be a part of it - Pigment owner and artist Amy Paul's studio was on the map. Aside from having a rad store, she also has a really awesome studio!

There is much to admire about Amy Paul. Many admire her work that adorn the walls in our shop. (check out her work sold online, here).  We admire her leadership, her wit, her quirkiness, her ability to raise a family and be a working mom all at the same time.

Women's History Month featuring Sandy Chilewich...

If you are a fan of design, then the name "Chilewich" should ring a bell. The colorful and modern design of tabletop accessories and floor coverings has staked a place in home design & decor since 1997. Sandy Chilewich is the founder and director of Chilewich, and we are happy to feature her in part of celebrating Women's History Month.

sandy-chilewich-portrait

Prior to launching Chilewich in 1997, Sandy had been running the hosiery company Hue, that she started in her 20s. After helping to run that company for 16 years, Sandy decided to veer away from the fashion industry and expand her creative efforts towards her fascination with materials and textiles. Eventually that evolved into Chilewich.

Chliewich-Mats

(Chilewich table mats - shop for them here)

“The durability of this extruded yarn, the intrinsic sheen of the material, its tremendous design versatility, and the fact that it is washable inspired me then and continues to inspire me today," says Chilewich.Chilewich_Bask_Floor_Alt__31897.1340560066.1280.1280

In 2004, her husband, and architect Joe Sultan, joined the company full time as CEO. The two have changed the firm’s corporate name to Chilewich l Sultan LLC to reflect their emergent business partnership.

We Are Tangerine Tree Photography...

These are our friends - Tangerine Tree Photography.

Aside from being a very talented photography duo, they are an incredibly nice couple, and a very sweet family (that's growing!).

Where did the name "Tangerine Tree Photography" come from? "Erik and I started Tangerine Tree Photography together about 4 years ago after working separately on other little photo ventures . We are huge Beatles fans, and came up with a list of lyrics from songs that we liked, and Tangerine Tree stuck ("Tangerine Trees and Marmalade Skies" from Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds)."

When you hear the word "community" what comes to mind? "Community is an extension of home and family, and really sharing a sense of responsibility and connectedness to the people around you. Feeling that what you put out into the universe will ultimately come back to you."

What do you look for when you shop at Pigment? Madi - "I love how you bring the outdoors inside. The eco orbs and butterfly collections on the walls are my favorite. My Mom and I like to pick up plants and work on them together. The orbs are definitely a two person job! :)"

Sheri - "I can't resit the plants and Tend orbs,  Gainey pots, and Rifle paper products.  We find ourselves checking out the baby items more and more...because we're expecting a baby this summer!"

What makes Pigment unique to you? Erik - "When explaining Pigment to friends who have never been into the shop, I always say that you could close your eyes, reach out and grab something, and whatever it is that you picked, it's going to be awesome.  It'll be cool, different, fun and you'll love it.  There aren't many shops I know of where you can do that."

Sheri - "I always leave feeling inspired to go home and create something! Maybe redecorate a little nook in my home, send out a handwritten note or cook a new meal for my family."

Sheri loves Pigment's jewelry selection. She accessorized her (very cute) outfit with a one of our Roost Gold Cuffs we used to carry. (Be on the look out for more Jewelry online and in store!)

Erik, Sheri and Madi were photographed on the very lovely Charmichael Loft Sofa by Gus Modern Furniture. This beaut is currently staged in our Vintage pop up shop located on Ray Street. Check it out if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Thank you, Tangerine Tree Photography + Madi, for such a fun photo session! We feel the love and support, truly.

We Are... OBR Architecture

These are our friends and neighbors, The Olivers. Aside from being an adorable family they are a staple people in our community. Garrick runs OBR Architecture (he being the "O" in "OBR") which neighbors our pop-up shop on Ray street. Their designs can be seen all through out North Park and scattered around the rest of San Diego. And Jen is the Associate Director of Young Audiences of San Diego, a nonprofit arts education provider that works with over 200 schools in San Diego county.

Their daughter, Fiona, loves to read stories.

What's your favorite thing about North Park?  "North Park is like taking a little slice of small town life and shoving it into the city.  I love the small, tight knit business and residential communities that I am a part of."

What makes Pigment unique to you? Garrik says - "Pigment is a microcosm of North Park.  Eclectic, community supporting, artistic, and on and on." Jen says - "It's the perfect spot for unique gifts for any occasion.  I am constantly running over there for last-minute gifts and have always been satisfied.

Where do you all like to go for a fun family outing?   "Fiona loves pretty much anywhere that has animals (including Pigment), and well, we pretty much go wherever she wants."

The Oliver's were shot on our lovely Adelaide Sofa by Gus - our staple set up for the past "We Are" posts. As we venture away from this lovely sofa, we leave you with a reminder that today is the last day of our President's Day sale - 10% Off ALL Gus Modern Furniture.

We Love Gus Modern Furniture. And we love the Olivers and all that they've help create within our community.
